Silk PLA Settings Guide: How to Get Beautiful Results
Silk PLA produces stunning shiny prints but has quirks that trip up many users. Here are the exact settings for perfect silk PLA with minimal stringing and good layer adhesion.
Silk PLA (also called shiny PLA or metallic PLA) contains additives — usually silicone or other lubricants — that give it an iridescent, silky sheen. The finish is beautiful, especially on organic shapes and decorative prints. But those same additives change how it flows, sticks to itself, and handles moisture.
Common problems users report:
- More stringing than standard PLA
- Poor layer adhesion (layers split apart)
- Rough or pitted surfaces
- Colors look dull instead of silky
Usually these are settings issues.
Temperature Settings
Silk PLA typically needs 5–15°C higher than regular PLA.
| Setting | Regular PLA | Silk PLA |
|---|---|---|
| Nozzle temp | 200–215°C | 215–230°C |
| Bed temp | 55–60°C | 55–65°C |
Start at 220°C. If you have layer adhesion issues, go to 225–230°C. If you have excessive stringing, drop back to 215°C and increase retraction.
Many users default to their regular PLA settings and wonder why silk PLA looks rough — the temperature difference is the reason.
Cooling Fan
Silk PLA benefits from slightly less cooling than regular PLA. High fan speeds can cause the surface to lose its sheen and appear matte.
Fan speed: 70–80% (vs 100% for regular PLA)
Don't go below 60% or you'll get droopy overhangs. The sweet spot is 70–75%.
Print Speed
Slower speeds improve surface quality with silk PLA. The slower extrusion gives the material time to flow smoothly.
| Setting | Value |
|---|---|
| Outer wall / perimeter | 40–50mm/s |
| Infill | 50–60mm/s |
| First layer | 20mm/s |
Retraction Settings
Silk PLA strings more than regular PLA due to its additive content. You'll likely need to increase retraction.
| Type | Distance | Speed |
|---|---|---|
| Direct drive | 1–2mm | 30–45mm/s |
| Bowden | 5–7mm | 45–60mm/s |
Also enable "Wipe while retracting" in your slicer if available.
Layer Adhesion Problems
If layers are splitting or the print is brittle, the problem is almost always temperature. Silk PLA needs higher temps for good inter-layer bonding.
Fix: Increase nozzle temp to 225–230°C, reduce print speed, and reduce fan speed.
Making the Surface Shine
To get the maximum shimmer effect:
- Vase mode (spiralize) for hollow decorative objects — no seam, continuous wall, perfect for silk PLA
- Slower outer wall speed — 30–40mm/s on perimeters
- Fewer or no top/bottom layers for transparent silk — lets light through for extra sheen
- Smooth PEI bed — leaves a smoother first layer surface than textured PEI
Multi-Color / Dual-Color Silk PLA
Bi-color silk PLA (like Bambu's multi-color PLA) changes color as it twists due to two differently-colored PLA strands combined. These need the same settings as standard silk PLA. The color shift depends on print angle — experiment with orientation.
